I recently attended all four KS3 Physics training days held at the Physics Factory in May 2010. The days are currently only advertised for teachers but I strongly recommend that technicians should also attend. Philip Jones has told me that next years KS3 training fliers will state that the training is also useful for technicians.
I found all four days immensely helpful to me in my new role as a science technician. The main emphasis of the training was to increase teachers engagement with Physics through practical. The theory of each section was explained very clearly and then there was quality time for hands on experience of doing the practical activities. Being from a Chemistry background the courses have helped to improve my subject knowledge and confidence with setting up Physics experiments. I now feel much more confident!
I believe even experienced technicians would benefit from attending training like this especially if Physics practicals are ignored in their schools due to a lack of Physics specialist teachers in their department.
Because of the training I am now thinking about pursuing a career in teaching sometime in the future.
