Today, Tim Simmons the Chief Executive of the Ogden Trust visited the Physics Factory to see how his support has impacted on young peoples lives. Tim met students from Bartley Green, Al-Hijrah, Hillcrest and Lordswood Girls. All the students have been enthused with Physics because of the specialist teaching they have received at the Physics Factory.

Dear Philip,

Thank you very much for your warm welcome at the Physics Factory last week – it was a rare treat for me to take part.

Jenny, Neil and you have such a good blend of knowledge, enthusiasm and empathy with the teachers, which together make for very effective training. The lab looked tremendous – well organized storage and inspiring displays. With so much practical work – set up and ready for us to use- we quickly assimilated the value and idiosyncrasies of the demonstrations and class practicals you introduced. I liked the way you encouraged discussion and valued our contributions. The powerpoint notes, which exactly matched the requirements of the specification, were very valuable.

Thank you also for giving me the opportunity to chat to Caroline. The ambassador role is very important to her, and she was keen to let me know the kind of activities made available to her- no doubt that the experience has been of real value to her – as well as to the younger students she has influenced.

I tried some aspects of your current electricity model with Cambridgeshire GTPs last week - most notably, the circuit diagram tape on the floor. An excellent source of discussion. It won’t be long before I have a drinks carton lift cage complete with plasticine man to replace the slotted masses in my ‘efficiency’ experiment! Many thanks for these, and other ideas.

It’s always good to see other trainers in action – we can pick up so many hints and alternative ways of presenting the physics.

Today a year seven group from Shenley learnt how Forces can be lots of fun!!!!! They were so well-behaved and enthusiastic that we completed five practical activites in two hours!! They whizzed rocket balloons across the lab, made helium balloons hover in the air, created magic snow, watched the amazing putt-putt boats and sped across the lab on the hovercraft.

I have my MOJO back. It may sound cliched but The Physics Factory course last summer has genuinely changed my teaching of Physics.

For the first time in my teaching career, I am confident with my ability to teach Physics and I am thoroughly enjoying it. My lessons are great fun and the pupils are engaged in a stimulating learning environment.

I can see the big picture now. I never imagined that Physics could actually be interesting (in fact, I now find it fascinating!!)

Almost 400 year 10 and 11 students came to our Medical Physics event. Each day included 14 hands-on Workshops run thanks to clinical scientists/other professionals from the QE and Selly Oak NHS hospitals, paramedics, equipment suppliers, Aston university and others. Prof Stuart Green gave an amazing key note talk highlighting how important Physics is in the delivery of 21st Century diagnostic techniques.
The students had a go at using defibulators, endoscopes, pulse oximeters, ultrasound, respiratory equipment, optical kit, radiation protection suits and X-rays to see through a Kinder surprise chocolate egg! A show of hands at the beginning and end of the day evidenced how many more were consider A-level Physics as a result of this action-packed day.

Hello, I'm Jenny Watson - the newest starter at the Physics Factory in Birmingham.

I did a PhD on Low-temperature High-magnetic field Semiconductors in Oxford University, followed by a post doc in Belgium. Since then I've been working, firstly in IT. Following this I have been a Secondary Science teacher for three years.

I am really excited about my new role at the Physics Factory, where I shall be producing electronic and physical resources and helping deliver CPD and topic-focussed Physics teaching to students from Birmingham schools and further afield.

11 AS Maths students from KESH Academy came to the Physics Factory to experience a practical approach to AS Mechanics. They studied velocity-time graphs using data-loggers, resolved forces, predicted and measured forces on an object on an inclined plane and experienced Newton's Laws of motion on a hovercraft!

Revels, other sweets & particle physics - Stewart Feather/Waverley lesson (28th January 2011)

Stewart used a packet of Revels to get over the point of some particles being fundamental (the pure chocolate revel) and other particles being non-fundamental (e.g. the orange centred revel)

Other activities with sweets included a model containing three small sweets wrapped in aluminium foil. This represented the three quarks in a neutron and proton. The students were given a task where they had to predict the charge on the two different types of quark for a neutron and a proton.
